Teaching Anatomy : A Practical Guide

    2021
    Second Edition
Forlagets beskrivelse: The field of anatomy is dynamic and fertile. The rapid advances in technology in the past few years have produced exciting opportunities in the teaching of gross anatomy such as 3D printing, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital anatomy models, portable ultrasound, and more. Pedagogical innovations such as gamification and the flipped classroom, among others, have also been developed and implemented. As a result, preparing anatomy teachers in the use of these new teaching tools and methods is very timely. The main aim of the second edition of ”Teaching Anatomy – A Practical Guide” is to offer gross anatomy teachers the most up-to-date advice and guidance for anatomy teaching, utilizing pedagogical and technological innovations at the forefront of anatomy education in the five years since the publication of the first edition. This edition is structured according to the teaching and learning situations that gross anatomy teachers will find themselves in: large group setting, small group setting, gross anatomy laboratory, writing examination questions, designing anatomy curriculum, using anatomy teaching tools, or building up their scholarship of teaching and learning. Fully revised and updated, including fifteen new chapters discussing the latest advances, this second edition is an excellent resource for all instructors in gross anatomy.

Paternal Postnatal Psychiatric Illnesses : A Clinical Case Book

    2018
Forlagets beskrivelse: This book is the first to present the current research showing that like mothers, some fathers struggle with postpartum psychiatric illnesses and have unique needs of their own. Each chapter opens with a case vignette that describes different psychopathologies in the father and demonstrates the unique struggles presented by each situation. The cases highlight social, emotional and cultural upheaval that fathers may experience during the postpartum period. Sections in each chapter include manifestations of their illness, DSM-5 diagnoses, case discussion, treatment interventions and recommendations for health care professionals. This volume also puts paternal postpartum depression into conversation with other psychiatric comorbidities, including various personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and addictions. The text also addresses the various stigmas associated with these unique cases and offers clinical pearls on how to treat these families while giving consideration to the needs of the family. Written by renown experts in postpartum health, ”Paternal Postnatal Psychiatric Illnesses” is an excellent resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, family therapists, general practitioners, obstetricians, social workers, and all clinicians working with postpartum families.

Youth Suicide Prevention and Intervention : Best Practices and Policy Implications

    2022
    1. ed. 2022
Summary: This open access book focuses on the public health crisis of youth suicide and provides a review of current research and prevention practices. It addresses important topics, including suicide epidemiology, suicide risk detection in school and medical settings, critical cultural considerations, and approaches to lethal means safety. This book offers cutting-edge research on emerging discoveries in the neurobiology of suicide, psychopharmacology, and machine learning. It focuses on upstream suicide prevention research methods and details how cost-effective approaches can mitigate youth suicide risk when implemented at a universal level. Chapters discuss critical areas for future research, including how to evaluate the effectiveness of suicide prevention and intervention efforts, increase access to mental health care, and overcome systemic barriers that undermine generalizability of prevention strategies. Finally, this book highlights what is currently working well in youth suicide prevention and, just as important, which areas require more attention and support. Key topics include: The neurobiology of suicide in at-risk children and adolescents. The role of machine learning in youth suicide prevention. Suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention in schools. Suicide risk screening and assessment in medical settings. Culturally informed risk assessment and suicide prevention efforts with minority youth. School mental health partnerships and telehealth models of care in rural communities. Suicide and self-harm prevention and interventions for LGBTQ+ youth. Risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in Black youth. Preventing suicide in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). Youth Suicide Prevention and Intervention is a must-have resource for policy makers and related professionals, graduate students, and researchers in child and school psychology, family studies, public health, social work, law/criminal justice, sociology, and all related disciplines

    Growing in to Autism

    2022
Summary: From the outside looking in, Sandra Thom-Jones was living a successful life: she had a great career, a beautiful home, a caring husband, two loving sons and supportive friends. But from the inside looking out, she was struggling to make sense of her place in the world, constantly feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, and convinced that her challenges with daily life just meant that she had to try harder. In Growing In to Autism, Thom-Jones tells the story of gradually realizing that she was autistic, and that she experienced the world in ways which were markedly different from neurotypical people. This was a profound awakening - throughout her life she had been masking her true self and this effort had come at great physical, mental and emotional cost. Applying her skills as an experienced and expert researcher, Thom-Jones delved into the literature on autism in adults, learning much more than she already knew as a parent of two autistic boys. Part personal, funny, endearing and enlightening memoir, and part rigorous explication of the nature of autism, Growing in to Autism is a book for all people, memorably conveying the need for better understanding and ways of making space for a group of individuals in our society who have so much to offer

Family-Centred Perinatal Care : Improving Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum Care

    2017
Forlagets beskrivelse: Since childbirth became a medicalized - and usually hospitalized - event a century ago, women's and families' psychosocial needs have been relegated to a somewhat peripheral role within the clinically focussed hierarchy of medical care. This text reinstates psychosocial issues as a primary focus of care, together with clinical excellence. Family-centred care is a familiar phrase in today's maternity services, with professional guidelines and hospital policies including the term in their care protocols; however, few definitions, and no specific standards, for family-centred care exist. While all caregivers and care services are likely to define their care as sensitive to women's needs, and family-centred, the actual implementation of a family-centred approach - despite it being a current fashion in care - is still inadequate. This book clearly defines family-centred perinatal care, and outlines how truly family-centred care can, and should, be implemented, and how, and where, this has been done. The first book to address a family-centred approach to perinatal care, providing a guide for caregivers, institutions and professional bodies dealing with perinatal care. Integrates the roles of mothers, fathers and newborns with those of multiple caregivers involved in perinatal care, such as obstetricians, paediatricians, midwives, nurses, psychologists, childbirth educators, physiotherapists, social workers, and academic and professional bodies, as well as with extended family members and community agencies. Includes up-to-date and evidence-based research supporting a family-centred approach, and illustrates the text with anecdotes based on over forty years of experience applying a family-centred approach to clinical perinatal care.
